Chapter 15

Back at Work

“Tell me all about your trip Charlene! I was dying to hear how your week was!” Betty Anne cornered Charlene the second she walked in the door.

Charlene laughed. She glanced at the clock behind the nurse’s station and saw that she was early. She had at least fifteen minutes to herself before she started her shift.

“Oh, it was interesting.”

Betty Anne raised a brow. “Interesting? Like how so? What did you do?”

Somehow Charlene managed to keep a straight face. “Not much. I went to a party and a couple shows. Mostly I just wanted to relax on the beach and around the house.”

The younger nurse’s eyes widened with sudden clarity and she grinned. “Oh my god! You were seeing a guy weren’t you?”

Charlene hesitated before she finally nodded. “I might have been. It’s nothing serious though. Just casual. We agreed to visit each other a couple times and see where it went.”

“That’s so exciting! And romantic!” Betty Anne crooned. “I can’t even imagine being involved in a long distance relationship. It would be so hard but probably so rewarding when you get to see each other again.”

Laughing, Charlene opened the cupboard where the nurses stored their belongings and stashed her purse. “I wouldn’t go as far to say it’s a relationship.”

“How did you meet! You have to tell me everything!”

“He’s- uh- a good friend. We’ve been friends for years and then it turned into something else.”

“What’s he like? You have to tell me Charlene! I have no love life of my own!”

“He’s the tall, dark, mysterious kind of man I guess. He has a nice house and a good job. I don’t know, I’m not sure what else to tell.”

“Is he romantic?”

Charlene grinned. “I guess you could say that.” She busied herself by grabbing a clipboard and looking over the notes. “I see you got Murial to take her medication every day. How did you manage that?”

“She kept telling me about whatever you were bringing back for her. She said you promised something and she wanted to stay alive to see what it was.”

Laughing, Charlene set the chart down. “Oh yes, I almost forgot. I did indeed bring her something back.” She opened the cupboard again and took out her purse. As she bent down, Betty Anne moved closer. Charlene straightened, Murial’s gift in her hand. She’d wrapped the small box in brown paper.

“Wow! Holy shit did he give you that?” Betty Anne indicated the diamond necklace Charlene had tucked into her scrubs. It had popped out when she bent over and swung freely around her neck.

“Yes,” she whispered. She reached up and hid the necklace back under her shirt. “He did.”

“So he’s either rich or in love. Or both.” Betty Anne’s face was radiant.

Charlene smothered a smile. “I’m not sure. Definitely rich. I can’t speak to the other.”

“Are you? I mean, maybe that’s too personal a question. Forget I said anything!” Betty Anne looked mortified but Charlene waved off her concerns.

“Yes,” she said firmly. “I’ve loved him for ten years.
